Getting a marriage license in Greenville County, step by step
Two visits to think about: the Probate Court for the license, and whoever officiates your ceremony. Here’s exactly how the license works — and how we can be the second half, in English or Spanish, from $99.
Where and how to apply
Marriage licenses in Greenville are issued by the Greenville County Probate Court (301 University Ridge). Both applicants appear together to file the application with valid photo ID (a foreign passport or matrícula consular works for identification) and the filing fee — around $70 in Greenville County; confirm the current amount and hours with the court before going.
South Carolina has no residency requirement (you can live in NC or GA and marry here), no blood test, and no citizenship requirement. Applicants provide their Social Security numbers when they have them; the court has a declaration process when they don’t.
The 24-hour rule (and other timing facts)
- South Carolina requires a 24-hour wait between filing the application and issuance of the license. File Monday, pick up Tuesday or later.
- Once issued, a South Carolina marriage license does not expire — no 30/60/90-day deadline like other states.
- You’ll receive the license packet to hand to your officiant; after the ceremony, the officiant returns it to the court, which issues your certified marriage certificate — the document you’ll use for name changes, insurance, taxes and immigration filings.
Who can marry you (this surprises people)
In South Carolina, marriages can be solemnized by ministers, judges — and notaries public (S.C. Code § 20-1-20). That means you don’t need to wait for a courthouse slot or find a church: a commissioned notary can perform a fully legal ceremony on your schedule.
That’s us: bilingual civil ceremonies from $99 — at our office, your home or your venue, in English, Spanish or both, with the license completed and returned to the court for you.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a marriage license in Greenville County?
Around $70 at the Greenville County Probate Court — fees vary by county in South Carolina (some are far cheaper), so confirm the current amount with the court. Both applicants must apply in person together.
How long does it take to get married in SC?
The license requires a 24-hour wait after applying. With the license in hand, you can marry immediately — with us as officiant, often the same week you decide.
Do we need to be SC residents or U.S. citizens?
Neither. South Carolina issues marriage licenses regardless of residency or immigration status; valid photo identification (foreign passports accepted) is what the court needs. SSNs are provided when applicants have them.
Does a South Carolina marriage license expire?
No — unlike many states, an issued SC license has no expiration date. You can plan the ceremony without a countdown.
Who can legally perform our wedding?
Ministers, judges and notaries public. Our commissioned notary performs civil ceremonies in English or Spanish from $99, including completing and returning the license so your certificate issues without extra trips.
How do we get the marriage certificate afterward?
The officiant returns the completed license to the Probate Court, which records the marriage and issues certified copies — that certificate is what you use for immigration, insurance and name changes. We handle the return as part of every ceremony.
